The Battle to Retake Mosul Is Stalemated
Iraqi Kurdistan — On a clear and chilly day in mid-December, Iraqi
counterterrorism service (CTS) troops were fighting to clear Islamic
State fighters from the Karama and Sumer districts in eastern Mosul.
Like many of the other 38 neighborhoods of eastern Mosul that CTS
officers said they had retaken, Karama had previously been reported
liberated numerous times in local media since early November, and
fighting had been ongoing in Sumer for days. Meanwhile, beleaguered
Iraqi Army 9th Division troops — one of the only Iraqi security forces
(ISF) units inside Mosul — were withstanding another withering Islamic
State counterattack after overextending themselves in the Wahda

North Korean border guards are down with diarrhea after consuming a
special diet ordered by the country's leader, Kim Jong-un, sources told a
radio service. "Under the direction of Kim Jong-un, North Korea's
people's armed forces increased the supply of materials to improve the
diet of border guard soldiers," a source in North Hamgyong Province told
Radio Free Asia, UPI reported. The source added that all the soldiers,
from a unit of border guards who consumed the new food supply, are
suffering from diarrhea.

(Reuters) - Bana Alabed, the young Syrian girl who drew global attention
with her tweets from Aleppo before being evacuated to Turkey this week,
says she hopes to go back to her hometown one day and fulfil a dream.
"When I grow up I want to become a teacher and go back to Aleppo and
teach the children of Aleppo," Bana told Reuters in an interview in
Ankara on Thursday. The seven-year-old and her family were led safely
from the rebel-held eastern part of Aleppo this week and later arrived
in Turkey where they met President Tayyip Erdogan at his palace in
Ankara on Wednesday. Turkey has supported rebels fighting Syrian
